- Description
- Japanese surrealist author, Kobo Abe, had a penchant for writing gripping and gruesome examinations of the motivations and internal dialogues of characters set in fictionalized contemporary societies. Frequently channeling science fiction, Abe often begins by describing a horrific disfiguration or genetic adaptation afflicting an individual or society and proceeds to explore how these mutilations affect the humanity and mental growth of his characters. Praised as one of the first Japanese authors to diverge from traditional literary tropes, Abe's eccentric and vivid prose, drama, short fiction, and poetry provided significant inspiration to later modernist authors.
